The future of Thomas Partey at Arsenal remains uncertain, but newly appointed sporting director Andrea Berta could be the key to resolving the midfielder’s contract situation.

Partey, 31, is nearing the end of what many consider his most impactful season since arriving in North London. Yet, with his contract set to expire this summer, questions still linger about whether he’ll remain at the Emirates.

His value to the team is unquestionable. Partey has become a mainstay in Mikel Arteta’s strongest starting XI, making 45 appearances this season. His influence was highlighted during Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final, where his late booking for a needless exchange with Dani Ceballos—while Arsenal led 5-1—drew frustration. That yellow card means he’ll miss the crucial semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite his importance, Partey’s future remains unresolved. Historically, signs have pointed towards an exit when his contract runs out. Arteta was notably reserved when asked about contract negotiations last week.

“There is progress with all the players,” he said. “I’ll leave that to Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and talk about.” Pressed on whether Arsenal intends to keep Partey, Arteta reiterated: “The intention is very clear. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward.”

With just a month left in the season and no extension signed, it’s unclear whether Arsenal are prioritizing his renewal. However, Berta’s recent arrival may offer a shift in perspective.

Berta and Partey share a strong connection dating back to their time at Atlético Madrid. It was Berta who oversaw Partey's £45 million move to Arsenal in 2020. Now, with Berta overseeing transfers at Arsenal, his presence could influence a decision to keep the Ghanaian international beyond this season.

Yet, several factors weigh against a new deal. Arsenal are expected to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi this summer, which could push Partey down the pecking order. Offering a new contract—especially one matching his current £200,000-per-week salary—may not be financially prudent if he’s not starting regularly.

Partey also has a history of injuries, including a groin issue that limited him to just 15 appearances last season. However, surgery at the end of 2023 is believed to have resolved that problem.

If no agreement is reached, Partey is unlikely to be short on options. Reports suggest interest from former club Atlético Madrid, as well as Barcelona and several clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Ultimately, whether Partey stays or goes may come down to Berta—one of the few people in Arsenal’s hierarchy who knows the player both professionally and personally. With the season winding down, a decision will need to be made soon.
