Rangers are on the verge of naming Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s current director of football, as their new sporting director.
The 51-year-old has already confirmed his intention to leave the Premier League side at the end of the season. Now, with Rangers undergoing a comprehensive review of their football operations—initiated earlier this year by chief executive James Bisgrove—Thelwell has emerged as the preferred candidate to lead the club’s sporting restructure.
Bringing a wealth of experience, Thelwell joined Everton in 2022 after serving as head of sport at MLS side New York Red Bulls. Prior to that, he was director of football at Wolverhampton Wanderers and has also held key roles alongside former Motherwell boss Billy Davies at both Preston North End and Derby County.
His expected arrival marks the beginning of a significant new chapter at Ibrox. It also coincides with the anticipated takeover of the club by American businessman Andrew Cavenagh and San Francisco 49ers Enterprises, which is nearing completion.
Thelwell’s appointment is likely to be the first of several major changes as Rangers aim to modernize and strengthen their football operations.
