Arjan Veurink will step down from his role as England assistant coach after this summer’s European Championship to take charge of the Netherlands women’s national team.

The 38-year-old Dutchman, who has worked alongside Sarina Wiegman since 2017, will return home to lead the Oranje, signing a contract through to the 2029 Euros. Veurink will succeed Andries Jonker after the tournament in Switzerland.

Veurink and Wiegman forged a successful partnership, guiding the Netherlands to a historic Euro title on home soil in 2017, before taking charge of England in 2021. Together, they led the Lionesses to European glory in 2022 and a runner-up finish at the 2023 World Cup.

England and the Netherlands are set to face off in the group stage of this summer’s Euros on Wednesday, 9 July.

Speaking about his new role, Veurink said: "This is not only a great challenge and an exciting new adventure, it also feels like the natural next step in my career. I've always been open about my ambition to one day lead the Dutch national team."

"After more than eight years working at the highest level alongside Sarina Wiegman, both with the Netherlands and in England, I feel ready to take the reins myself. Doing so in my home country makes it even more special. For now, I’m fully focused on finishing the job with England on a high."

The Football Association praised Veurink’s contributions, saying: "Arjan remains a highly valued and respected member of Sarina's team. His full attention is on the Lionesses' UEFA Women's Nations League campaign and the upcoming Euros. There’s still important work to be done before we bid him farewell."

Veurink’s return to the Netherlands marks a full-circle moment in his career — and a new chapter for Dutch women’s football.
