Paris Saint-Germain are on the verge of securing their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title, needing just a draw against Angers on Saturday. However, for Luis Enrique, the motivation goes beyond silverware—he is aiming to make history by becoming the first manager to lead a team through an entire Ligue 1 season unbeaten.

With only seven matches remaining, PSG also remain in contention for their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, as they prepare to host Aston Villa in the quarterfinal first leg on Wednesday.

"I wasn’t particularly interested in records before, but now, of course, we want to go unbeaten this season," Luis Enrique told reporters on Friday.

"We don’t just want to win the title—we want to be competitive, perform well, and keep improving our records and statistics."

The 54-year-old emphasized that his focus remains on 14th-placed Angers, but acknowledged that Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will pose a significant challenge in Europe.

"Unai Emery is an excellent coach. He has demonstrated his ability to analyze opponents and strengthen his teams at various clubs," he said.

"We know what kind of opponent we’ll be facing. They performed at a high level last year, and I think they’re even stronger this season."

"Extra Motivation" for Club World Cup Glory

Luis Enrique also had the opportunity to view the new Club World Cup trophy, ahead of its expanded 32-team edition in June. PSG will be France’s sole representative in the tournament, something the coach sees as an added source of inspiration.

"We are representing France in the competition, and that gives us extra motivation," he said.

Despite PSG’s domestic dominance, European success has eluded them, with their closest attempt coming in the 2019-20 Champions League final loss to Bayern Munich. Last season, they were eliminated in the semifinals by Borussia Dortmund.

"We know we won’t always be perfect. There will be difficult moments and lapses in focus—that has been a constant in my career," Luis Enrique admitted.

"But we want to show that we are competitive. We have been at the top level in Europe for years, and we aim to establish ourselves as a dominant force on the global stage."
