Yeovil Town owner Martin Hellier has announced his intention to sell the club, citing ongoing online abuse directed at both him and his family.
Hellier, who has owned the club for nearly two years, played a key role in funding Yeovil’s promotion back to the National League last season. However, despite the club’s success on the pitch, he has decided to step away from his role.
"I fully intend to sell the club and leave as soon as a suitable buyer is found," Hellier stated on social media. "It’s simply not worth losing money while being abused—my children have been targeted as well."
Growing Tensions with Supporters
Yeovil Town, who were relegated from the English Football League (EFL) in 2019, currently sit 13th in the National League. However, tensions between Hellier and sections of the fanbase have been escalating for some time.
Several supporters—including contributors to the unofficial podcast Gloverscast—have been banned from Huish Park for comments made on social media.
Last week, a fan publicly shared a two-year stadium ban letter issued by the club, triggering a backlash on social media. In response, Hellier posted abusive messages of his own, further fueling the controversy.
Financial Challenges & Exit Plans
While Yeovil secured a dominant title win in the National League South last season, recently published accounts reveal that the club recorded a £2.8 million loss during the campaign.
Hellier claims his personal financial contributions have totaled £4 million, but rather than appreciation, he has been met with hostility.
"My investment kept the club going and delivered promotion, but all I’ve received in return is abuse," he added. "I have no intention of being at YTFC next season. Your abuse has succeeded. Now leave me alone until the end of the season."
Yeovil Town will now enter a period of uncertainty as Hellier seeks a new owner to take the club forward.
