Booed at half-time, booed at full-time, and even during the match, Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool marked a dismal day for Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag.
With Arne Slot's team leading 3-0 by the 60th minute, many Old Trafford supporters began leaving the stadium well before the final whistle.
However, the outcome could have been even worse.
"Liverpool could have been 5-0 up once they made it 3-0," former Manchester United defender Gary Neville remarked on Sky Sports during the match.
"They're getting completely torn apart."
Former captain Roy Keane was just as disheartened by the scenes at Old Trafford.
"They were utterly shocking," he commented on Sky Sports.
"Every time Liverpool attacked, it seemed like they were going to score.
"There's been a lot of talk recently about the club's plans for the stadium. But in a crucial game against Liverpool today, United simply didn't show up.
"For a match of this magnitude to be over within an hour, it's tough to swallow."
'A sobering day for Ten Hag and his players'
Ten Hag’s future grew increasingly uncertain as last season progressed, but after defeating Manchester City to claim the FA Cup in May, the club’s hierarchy chose to stick with the Dutchman following a thorough review.
With a promising crop of young players at the club, Ten Hag has emphasized that Manchester United are in a transitional phase. However, the boos from their fans suggest that they understandably believe their team should be closer to Liverpool's level.
Manchester United finished 22 points behind Liverpool last season, and Sunday's performance did little to indicate that they won't be trailing by a similar margin again this season.
"Liverpool fully deserved their victory," Neville added.
"It was a sobering day for Erik ten Hag, his players, and for the new ownership, who were in the stands, watching and wondering if they’re on the right path. That’s the question they need to answer in the coming months."
The game’s statistics might suggest it was a close contest. Both teams had three shots on target, and Manchester United slightly edged possession.
"But the stats don't tell the full story," Keane remarked. "It was far from an even match.
"Liverpool were very good and efficient. They looked stronger and fitter. You can try to put a positive spin on it, but United were shocking.
"They’re repeating the same mistakes as last season."
This defeat means Manchester United have now lost three of their last five Premier League home games against Liverpool, matching the total number of defeats they had in their previous 18 such matches.
United have also lost two of their opening three matches in a Premier League season for the third time in the last five years, with Ten Hag being the only manager to experience that twice with the club in the competition.
"Liverpool were brilliant," said former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin on BBC Radio 5 Live.
"United are still far off the mark. Liverpool worked tirelessly out of possession, while United looked disorganized. The passing and shape were terrible."'Leave football before it leaves you' - Casemiro's first-half struggles
Perhaps the most telling sign of Manchester United’s forgettable day was the performance of midfielder Casemiro.
Once regarded as one of the best in the world at his position, the Brazilian—who won multiple Champions League titles with Real Madrid—was substituted at half-time after two costly mistakes in the first half.
His misplaced pass was intercepted just moments before Luis Diaz scored the opening goal, and then he lost possession to Diaz, leading to Liverpool’s second.
"Leave the game before the game leaves you," said Carragher.
"He’s had an incredible career, winning everything there is to win, but it’s tough to watch him struggle like this."
Neville added: "I have to say, he’s lost a bit of his confidence.
"For someone like Casemiro, who has won Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, it can happen even to the best."What next for Ten Hag?
After Manchester United's board conducted their end-of-season review, they triggered a one-year extension to Ten Hag's contract that will keep him at the club until 2026.
This is his third season at Old Trafford, guiding them to a third-place finish in 2022-23 and then eighth last season.
"I don't think anything is going to change in terms of the football [at Man Utd]," added Carragher.
"Ten Hag said in his interview 'we will see where we are at the end of the season'.
"I would be surprised if he is still there at the end of the season."
Neville said: "Not just Erik ten Hag, but every manager has struggled.
"It is a time for a bit of calm. The international break [is here] which is well needed for Manchester United.
"Erik ten Hag needs to get the club into a position challenging for Champions League near Christmas or he will be in trouble."
