Sassuolo have sealed their return to Serie A after just one year away, with results on Sunday confirming their promotion under the guidance of 2006 World Cup hero Fabio Grosso.
Grosso’s side secured a crucial 3-1 victory over local rivals Modena on Saturday, and their promotion was confirmed a day later when third-placed Spezia dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Mantova. With five matches remaining, Serie B leaders Sassuolo now sit 16 points clear of the playoff spots—making their top-flight return a mathematical certainty.
Appointed in June last year, Grosso has transformed Sassuolo into a dominant force in Serie B. The 47-year-old has led his team to 23 wins in 33 games, with just four losses all season. His tactical discipline and attacking flair have kept Sassuolo at the top for the majority of the campaign.
Grosso, best remembered for scoring the decisive penalty in Italy’s 2006 World Cup final win over France and his dramatic goal in the semifinal against Germany, is now forging a strong legacy as a coach.
There’s a chance for another familiar name to join him in Serie A next season. Fellow World Cup winner Filippo Inzaghi is pushing for promotion with Pisa, currently second in the table and seven points ahead of third-placed Spezia.
With Sassuolo back among Italy’s elite, Grosso’s remarkable first season at the helm is already being hailed as a major success story in Italian football.
