Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Bruno Fernandes will not be leaving the club this summer.
The 30-year-old club captain, who signed a contract extension until 2027 last August, has been United’s standout performer this season. Recent reports have linked him with a potential move to Real Madrid, but Amorim quickly dismissed the speculation.
“No, it’s not going to happen,” Amorim said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.
When asked how he could be so certain, the former Sporting Lisbon manager responded with a smile: “Because I’ve already told him he’s not going anywhere.”
Fernandes’ Impact This Season
Fernandes has been crucial for United, scoring 16 goals across all competitions—more than any other player in the squad. In the week leading up to the most recent international break, he netted five times, including a Europa League hat-trick against Real Sociedad.
In the Premier League, only Mohamed Salah (54) and Erling Haaland (33) have contributed more combined goals and assists than Fernandes’ 31 this season.
Despite his efforts, United have struggled in the league, currently sitting 13th ahead of their clash with third-placed Nottingham Forest.
"This Is the Kind of Player We Want"
Amorim, like his predecessor Erik ten Hag, has been a strong supporter of Fernandes, even amid external criticism, particularly from former United captain Roy Keane.
“I want Bruno here because, even in our lowest moments, he…” Amorim began before shifting to a more optimistic stance.
“We want to win the Premier League again, so we need to keep our best players. He’s 30, but he’s still young because he plays 55 games a season and always delivers at least 30 goals and assists combined.”
Amorim also emphasized Fernandes’ deep connection to the club.
“We are in control of the situation, but I feel he is truly happy here. He understands our vision. He’s also a Manchester United supporter, so he really feels it,” he said.
“Some people criticize his visible frustration, saying it’s not ideal for a captain. But to me, that just shows how much he cares. That’s exactly the kind of player we want.”
