Uruguay players clashed with Colombian fans, following their team’s 1-0 loss in the Copa America semi-finals, before security personnel intervened to restore order.
Following Colombia's victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, video clips on social media showed some Uruguayan players climbing to the stands and exchanging punches with fans of the opposing team.
The South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL, said it was investigating the incident.
Darwin Nunez and Ronald Araujo were among the first Uruguayan players to quarrel with Colombian fans, while captain Jose Maria Jimenez said the players were defending their families.
Jimenez told the tournament's official broadcast station, "Let me say something before they cut off the broadcast, because they will not allow us to speak on the microphone, and they do not want me to say anything about what is happening, but this is a disaster. Please be careful, because our families are in the stands, and there are young children."
