The incident unfolded during Genk's 2-1 defeat by Anderlecht at Lotto Park on December 22, where Yira Sor found the net with a rebound from a missed penalty.

VAR intervened, disallowing the goal on the grounds of encroachment by Genk's Sor within the penalty area. Interestingly, the system overlooked encroachment by two Anderlecht players.

In response, Genk appealed, arguing that VAR misapplied the rules, and their appeal was ultimately upheld.

According to Law 14.3 of the International Football Association Board, if both defending and attacking players encroach during a penalty kick, it mandates a retake, regardless of the outcome of the initial kick.

Genk, in a released statement, indicated that the Disciplinary Council for Professional Football deemed itself "competent to rule on the matter."

This decision overturned the earlier stance of the Professional Referee Department, opting not to replay the match.

The statement elaborated that the council agreed with Genk's argument that the match officials had misapplied the rules during the crucial penalty phase.

As of now, a date for the replay has not been finalized. Genk currently occupies the fifth spot in Belgium's top flight, while Anderlecht, boasting 34-time championship titles, holds the second position.

Comparatively, in October, the Premier League dismissed the notion of a replay following Liverpool's contentious defeat by Tottenham.

In that instance, VAR failed to overturn an on-field decision, incorrectly disallowing a Luis Diaz goal for offside due to "significant human error."
