Hannah Hampton, 22, left Aston Villa at the conclusion of her contract this summer. Chelsea signed Hampton on a free transfer. Hampton is a member of England's Women's World Cup squad. Given Chelsea's depth in goalkeeping, a loan move to a rival WSL team could follow.
Following her departure from Aston Villa, Chelsea has acquired Hannah Hampton, an English goalkeeper, on a free transfer.
Hampton's two-year relationship with Villa came to an end this summer when her contract expired. During that time, the 22-year-old made 43 appearances for the team across all competitions.
She has now joined goalkeepers Zecira Musovic, Ann-Katrin Berger, and Emily Orman on Emma Hayes' championship team.
Hampton declared after joining Chelsea, "I'm very excited!" It is a privilege to be a member of such a large club and to be allowed to display the club's badge. I want to keep getting better, do anything I can to support the team, and I also want to assist the club win some trophies.
Hannah is without a doubt one of the top young goalkeepers in the world, said manager Emma Hayes. Her performances have become better every year, so we're optimistic about her future with us.
Hampton is one of the 23 players selected by England for the Women's World Cup, which begins this month in Australia and New Zealand and to which the Lionesses will travel on Wednesday.
The goalkeeper's transition to Chelsea brings to an end a year of highs and lows. The goalkeeper was benched in Sarina Wiegman's first England squad following the Euros in September due to "personal issues." The next three international squads did not include her.
Hampton was briefly removed from her club squad at Aston Villa around the same period, though Carla Ward did not go into further detail. She also had surgery in November for a muscular problem during this time.
However, since the beginning of 2023, Hampton has managed to reintegrate herself into the Aston Villa team. In April, Hampton was called up to the England team, and her form is perhaps better than ever.
In March, Ward stated: "I'm thrilled. She has put several personal measures in place since the new year that have benefited her, and I believe she has grown significantly over the past few months. Long may it continue. She is simply soaring and playing some of her finest football ever.
Hampton finished the campaign with five clean sheets for Villa in 15 WSL games.
